About this title

Synopsis:

In this provocative essay, Wallace Jackson challenges time-honored critical judgments of Alexander Pope. In a close, perceptive reading of Pope's major poems, thirteen texts written over a lifetime, Jackson calls attention to allegorical and fictive tendencies that earlier critics have undervalued or misunderstood. Exploring thematic and dictional relations between the texts, he reveals a steadily elaborated, cohesive design which pervades the canon.

Throughout his career, Pope not only rewrote his European predecessors; he also rewrote himself, Jackson argues, in continual acts of transposition and re-articulation by which he confronted the burden of his own texts as they imposed themselves upon his consciousness. Jackson identifies recurrences as units of meaning and discovers a complex sign system within the poems, revealing a coherent symbolism that bespeaks the continually enlarging pattern of Pope's poetic imagination and unifies such seemingly discordant poems as Windsor- Forest, the Rape of the Lock, the Essay on Man, and the Dunciad.

One of the major purposes of this inquiry is to explore Pope's poetry through the application of an intertextual methodology, and by so doing to provide another way of looking at a major poet whose imaginative complexity continues to appeal directly to us.
