Vaino: A Boy of New Finland (Paperback or Softback)

"Vaino: A Boy of New Finland" is a compelling work of historical fiction set against the backdrop of Finland's struggle for independence during the early 20th century. The story follows Vaino, a young Finnish boy, as he navigates the tumultuous landscape of his homeland during the revolution and the rise of a new nation. Interwoven with the contemporary narrative are the rich and evocative legends of the "Kalevala", the national epic of Finland, which serve to inspire and ground the protagonist in his cultural heritage.

Through Vaino's experiences, readers are introduced to the courage and resilience of the Finnish people as they seek to establish their sovereignty. The narrative beautifully blends the high-stakes reality of wartime with the mystical beauty of Finnish folklore, offering a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in Northern European history. As Vaino learns about his ancestors through the stories told by his elders, he finds the strength to face the challenges of a rapidly changing world. This work serves as both an engaging adventure and a significant cultural exploration, emphasizing the enduring power of national identity and the timeless value of oral traditions.
