Valley Ball: Overlooked No More - The Story of Rio Grande Valley Football

Deep in the southernmost tip of Texas, where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf Coast and Friday nights belong to football, an entire region has spent decades being overlooked. Not anymore.

Valley Ball: Overlooked No More tells the story of Rio Grande Valley football through the voices of the men who lived it. From Tom Landry, the Mission native who became one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, to the unsung linemen and small-town running backs who gave everything under the stadium lights and carried the Valley with them wherever life took them next. From Koy Detmer throwing touchdown passes in the pros to Juan Castillo coaching on the biggest stage in football, these are stories of grit, pride, and a region that never stopped believing in itself even when no one else was paying attention.

Authors Chris Doelle and Gabriel Rivera spent years collecting these stories, sitting with players, coaches, and community figures whose names may not appear in national record books but whose impact on the Valley is immeasurable. What emerges is more than a football book. It is a portrait of a community, a culture, and a way of life built on family values, relentless hard work, and a passion for the game that visitors never forget.

Valley football is not like football anywhere else. Come find out why.
