About this Item
This visceral wood engraving, based on a drawing by Julian Scott, was originally published in the Jan. 27, 1877 edition of Harper's Weekly. It shows a handful of American troops encamped at Valley Forge through the winter of 1778/78. Chosen as seasonal quarters for strategic reasons, this little community about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia (then held by the British) became a by-word for the suffering and endurance of the Continental Army. Julian Scott (1846 - 1902) was a noted painter of military history. Sheet Width (in) 15.5 Sheet Height (in) 11.1 Condition Description Uneven upper margin, where previously bound, and light toning around the edges. Near fine overall. Seller Inventory # 5279
