With an introduction by Whitelaw Reid. E.L. no. 298 in Everyman's Library Fiction series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- In flatback binding style 1, full carmine cloth-covered boards with Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, black topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page & frontis. Lacks the dust jacket. --- With acidic staining to front and rear endpapers, prior owner's discreet rubberstamping and pencilings to a few leaves, and small soiled spot to textblock fore-edge, else a clean, tightly bound copy.; 16mo (6 to 7 in. tall); xv, 699 pages.
