Vasarely Format: Trade Paperback

Explore the dynamic visual world of Victor Vasarely (1906–1997), the Hungarian-French artist widely regarded as a founding figure of Op Art. This pocket guide traces his development from graphic design and early experiments in abstraction to the dazzling geometric compositions that appear to pulse, swell, twist, and move before the viewer’s eyes. Learn what to look for in his repeated forms, optical contrasts, modular systems, spatial illusions, and precisely calibrated color relationships. Biographical insights, engaging anecdotes, a personal portrait, and memorable quotations reveal his ambition to create a universal visual language that could extend beyond museums into architecture and everyday life. A close examination of one major work explains how simple geometric elements produce complex perceptual effects. Featuring more than 65 full-color reproductions, this lively volume offers an accessible introduction to an artist whose bold experiments continue to influence design, digital imagery, and contemporary visual culture.

Victor Vasarely was a Hungarian-born French artist regarded as a principal founder of Op Art. Using geometric forms, systematic variations, and carefully orchestrated contrasts, he created images that generate striking sensations of movement, depth, vibration, and optical instability. His effort to unite art, mathematics, design, and architecture helped expand abstraction beyond the traditional canvas and had a major impact on postwar visual culture.
