The Vatican Council. Eight Months At Rome During The Vatican Council, Impressions By Pomponio Leto. Transl offers a contemporaneous English-language chronicle of Vatican I (1869–1870) in Rome, focusing on ceremony, politics, and the central question of papal infallibility. The narrative traces the clash between Ultramontanes seeking a formal definition of the Pope’s personal infallibility and a substantial Opposition wary of concentrating power and sidelining episcopal conscience. It surveys key actors—Pius IX, Guidi, Maret, Valerga, Strossmayer, and bishops from France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and America—along with the Jesuits and the Civiltà Cattolica circle. The account explains the schemata on ecclesiology, the four-chapter Constitution De Ecclesia culminating in the infallibility decree, and the procedural maneuvers—secret votes, prorogations, and popular demonstrations—that shaped outcomes. It also reflects on the broader implications for church–state relations, episcopal rights, and the church’s role in a modern society.
