ITALY THE VENETIAN REPUBLIC 421-1797 BY W. CAREW HAZLITT 1900 2 VOLUMES. It is my hope that those of you interested in books about Italy will have noted that I have listed several dozen interesting vintage books about the country, many with elaborate decorative presentations. I am pleased to offer another such set, namely: The Venetian Republic Its Rise, Its Growth, and Its Fall 421-1797 by W. Carew Hazlitt. This set of large and thick hard cover books (6 ¾ x 9 ¼ x 2 ½ inches, 814 & 815 pages) was published by Adam and Charles Black of London dated 1900 and a revised edition. These books are bound in finely ribbed green boards with a gilt symbol on the cover and gilt embossed title panels on the spines. Each volume has a fold-out map within the text and there is a folded larger map of The Venetian Empire and Adjacent Territories in a pocket on the rear board of Volume II. I was surprised that there are no other illustrations; the books are page after page of text and in a reasonably small font at that! Condition: This set of two large books is in very good condition. The hard covers are generally clean and very presentable. There has been some light bumping to the corners and spine tips, with some light fraying. The title panels on the spine both have some small chipping. Inside a former owner has left his handsome bookplate and some faint erasures of previous markings. The endpapers and some of the most adjacent pages show some light foxing doubtless from the acids of the binding glues which fortunately does not penetrate the text of either volume. All the hinges are still intact (a miracle considering the bulky size of the books) and the bindings are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders.…
