Vermont in the Great Rebellion

Vermont In The Great Rebellion by Otis Frederick Reed Waite. Vermont In The Great Rebellion is a historical compilation that surveys Vermont's role in the Civil War, drawn from Adjutant and Inspector General records, regimental rosters, and biographical sketches of notable officers. The work traces the formation and deployment of Vermont troops—infantry regiments, sharpshooters, batteries, and cavalry—through major campaigns and battles such as Bethel, Williamsburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Cedar Creek, and the final actions that led to the Confederate surrender. It weaves biographical notes for leaders like Stannard, Washburn, Phelps, Jarvis, Wales, and Tyler with anecdotes and incidents illustrating courage, endurance, and sacrifice. Prefaced with reflections on memory and gratitude to Vermont’s families, the book honors the citizens and soldiers who sustained the Union and preserves a record of their valor for future generations.
