The Vessle

He never missed a kick. Not once in thirty-five years. And he spent his whole life

telling the world it wasn’t him.

Samuel Reed was seven years old — the smallest boy on the team, the kicker who prayed

before every kick — when his best friend’s arm broke open on a peewee football field and

closed again under his hands. The adults explained it away. The children never did.

The gift follows Samuel through his whole life: quiet miracles in a small valley town, an

impossible streak that carries him to NFL fame, and four words that split a nation onto

identical t-shirts: It’s not me. I just ask. But when the wife who witnessed everything falls ill

and heaven says no, Samuel must learn the hardest prayer of all — and when a sign comes

that the world cannot explain away, adoration turns to fear, and the man they called a saint

is cast out as a fraud.

Then, years later, on a wet March night, the aging dam above his hometown begins to

speak. And an old man walks against the fleeing crowd, toward the water, carrying a football

— for the one kick he was born to make.

A sweeping story of faith, love, unanswered prayer, and a life not lost but given — for

readers who believe the opposite of a miracle is not death. It’s alone.
