First eition. Large engraved folding map in outline colour before title and 2 other maps, 1 folding. 8vo (8 x 5 inches), pages xvi:466:16 (publisher's list), original green grained cloth. Text block now detached from binding which is chipped at headbands and with spit to upper joint, Foreign Office stamp on upper cover. Title with Foreign Office stamp on title over stamped "Withdrawn", Foreign Office stamp on first leaf of text. Overall internally very clean with only occasional light foxing.One of Westgarth's most important books. The outstanding sociological thinker of his time, he contributed actively to the achievement of peace on the goldfields after Eureka as the uncompromisingly candid Chairman of the Commission of Enquiry.
