Video Game Art Reader: Volume 5: The Game Art Curators Kit

Many ambitious and experimental game forms don't fit into the digital download or retail distribution channels that support so-called “traditional” video games. Instead, these games are supported by a new global movement in video game curation. This special edition of the Video Game Art Reader features an international collaboration of video game professionals working together to create a resource for game exhibition organization, design, and curation. Professionals, artists, and others who organize and curate video game exhibitions and events act within a rhizomatic network of methods, missions, and goals. They establish organizations like galleries, collectives, and non-profits. Methods of sharing video games as critical cultural phenomena continue to evolve and expand. Conceived during the first meeting of GAIA (Game Arts International Assembly), the Game Art Curators Kit documents and shares the collective experience of an international network of video game curators and organizers. Sharing practical tips on everything from accessibility to preservation, the book also serves as a guide to support a new global movement in video game curation.
 

Tiffany Funk is an artist, critical theorist, and researcher specializing in emerging media, computer art, video games, and performance art practices. Funk is the director of publications for the Video Game Art Gallery and founder and editor-in-chief of the Video Game Art Reader. She is visiting assistant professor and co-founder of IDEAS (Interdisciplinary Education in the Arts)—an intermedia, theory and practice-based Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
María Luján Oulton is a curator and cultural producer. She holds an Mg in communication and cultural creation from Walter Benjamin Foundation of Buenos Aires. She is co-founder of GAIA, co-editor of Games Studies Journal at Universidad de Palermo, and director of Game on! El arte en juego. She is a lecturer at ORT, Uruguay and UMSA, Argentina.
Chaz Evans is an artist, educator, art historian, and curator. He holds an MA in art history and an MFA in new media art from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the director of exhibitions and co-founder of VGA Gallery, as well as assistant professor of media arts at the University of South Carolina. He regularly speaks and facilitates public conversations on new media and video game art.
Rene G. Cepeda is a curator and researcher. He holds a PhD in interactive new media art curation and display from the University of Sunderland. Rene runs the Manual for the Curation and Display of Interactive New Media Art. He is also a lecturer at UNARTE College in Puebla, Mexico. His research interests include interaction, new media art exhibition design, and video games.
Tim Kwasny is a video and performance artist. He received his BM in music composition from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and MFA at Columbia University in sound art. He is currently an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
