About the Author
Lynne Schafer Gross, Ph.D., has taught radio-television-film production and theory courses at California State University, Fullerton (where she was Vice Chair of the Communications Department); Pepperdine University; Loyola Marymount University; University of California, Los Angeles; University of Southern California; and Long Beach City College. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh; her master's from California State University, Long Beach; and her doctorate from UCLA. She is currently an associate producer for the instructional video series Journeys Below the Line produced by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation. During the 1980s she was Program Director for Valley Cable TV in Los Angeles. She has served as the producer for several hundred television programs, including the series From Chant to Chance for public television, Effective Living for KABC, and Surveying the Universe for KHJ-TV. She is active in many professional organizations, serving as a governor of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and President of the Broadcast Education Association. As chair of the Academy Student Activities Committee, she was instrumental in setting up the long-running student internship and student awards programs. James C. Foust, Ph.D., is an associate professor and currently chair of the Department of Journalism and Public Relations at Bowling Green State University, where he has taught since 1994; his teaching areas include broadcast journalism, journalism law and ethics, and online journalism. He received his bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University and his master's degree and doctorate from Ohio University. His book Big Voices of the Air: The Battle Over Clear Channel Radio was based on his dissertation research; his text Online Journalism: Principles and Practicies of News for the Web was based on his teaching interests. He has worked as a news videographer and editor at WYTV-TV in Youngstown, Ohio, where he also produced special projects. His background includes video production and multimedia design. During the summer of 2000, he worked at WXYZ-TV in Detroit as part of a National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) faculty development grant. His research interests include electronic media history, technology of mass communication and communication law.
