A View of Congregationalism

A View Of Congregationalism by George Punchard. This volume offers a comprehensive defense and exposition of Congregational church polity, tracing its scriptural basis, historical development, and practical implementation. Structured in five parts—Principles of Congregationalism, Doctrines, Testimony of Ecclesiastical History, Ecclesiastical Practice, and Advantages of Congregationalism—the work argues that the Scriptures alone guide church order and discipline, that a church is a voluntary, covenanted body of professed Christians who elect officers and discipline members without external control. It surveys biblical models and early Christian witnesses (e.g., Clement, Ignatius, Cyprian) to show the primitive church’s congregational character, then contrasts this with later episcopal and presbyterian systems. It sets forth procedures for forming churches, ordaining pastors and deacons, admitting and dismissing members, church discipline, and inter-church fellowship. Finally, it extols Congregationalism as scriptural, democratic, intellectually nurturing, and a bulwark against heresy, with reflections on its Puritan-New England heritage.
