About this Item
A second edition copy of Henry Hallam's first major work, 'View of the State of Europe During the Middle Ages', complete in three volumes. Henry Hallam was an English historian, best known for this his first work, the 'View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages', 'The Constitutional History of England', and his 'Introduction to the Literature of Europe, in the Fifteenth, Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries'. Hallam's 'View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages' surveyed the political development of the principal west European countries, paying particular attention to England's Anglo-Saxon and Norman constitutions. Described by the author himself as a series of historical dissertations, the text approaches the period from the 5th to the 15th century by separating the age into nine chapters. Five chapters cover the histories of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and of the Greek and Saracenic empires, whilst other sections deal with major institutional features of medieval society, such as the feudal system, the ecclesiastical system, and the political system of England. The last chapter of the work sketches society, commerce, manners, and literature in the Middle Ages. In the original publisher's paper covered boards. Externally, wear with loss to spines, worse to volume I. As usual with a paper binding. Tail of spine lifting to volume III. A few handling marks to boards, with a large tidemark to the front board of volume II. Internally binding strained but firm to the centre of volume III. Otherwise, generally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned with the odd handling mark. Tidemark to upper and lower extremity from half title page to page 3, volume 2. Good Only.
