Henry Hallam was a British historian, a fellow of the Royal Society and a trustee of the British Museum, well acquainted with the Whig party of his era and the authors and politicians who led the party. By profession a lawyer, upon his father s death he inherited a small estate to which he retired and pursued a literary career. View of the State of Europe was his first long work and is considered a series of historical dissertations for the time from the fifth century to the fifteenth.
