This was Hallam's first published work, and the first of a longer historical series. Ninth edition of this work. Full calf leather binding with gilt titles to fawn and green leather title labels, gilt decorated compartments, marbled page edges and end papers. Henry Hallam was a barrister before he formed his historical writing career. His first published book was his 'View of the State of Europe During The Middle Ages' which he described himself as a series of historical dissertations from the 5th to the 15th century. To this work he gives the history of several empires and countries such as France, Italy, Spain and Germany in addition to the Greek and Saracenic empires. Hallam also reflects on the social history of medieval times through discussions on the feudal, the ecclesiastical and political systems of England. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles to twin fawn and green labels, five raised gilt bands, with gilt line and decorated compartments, gently worn and rubbed. Joints good condition rubbed and worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition full calf, gilt decorated to the edges, outer edges of the boards decorated in gilt. Page edges good condition top edges slightly darkened, all marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition marbled, with blind tooled dentelles. End papers good condition marbled, subsequently tanned and foxed. Title good condition tanned with minor foxing. Pages good condition lightly tanned throughout each volume. Binding good condition attractive, worn and rubbed.
