View of the State of Europe During the Middle Ages. 2 Vols. With Supplemental Notes

View Of The State Of Europe During The Middle Ages. 2 Vols. With Supplemental Notes by Henry Hallam. This work offers a scholarly synthesis of medieval Europe from late antiquity to the late 13th–14th centuries, with a focus on Gaul/France and parts of northern Italy. It traces the transformation from Roman rule to a feudal-royal order, the growth of the Frankish kingdom into a French monarchy, and the interplay between secular power, church authority, and emerging legal and administrative systems. Major milestones such as Clovis's unification, Charlemagne's empire, the Verdun partition, and the rise of Hugh Capet anchor a narrative of centralization and fragmentation. The study also surveys Italian city-states, Lombard and Papal interventions, and the contested space between republics, signorie, and imperial authority, highlighting Guelf–Ghibelline dynamics, the Lombard League, and the influence of mercantile wealth on state formation. With extensive footnotes and historiographical critique, Hallam situates the origins of centralized monarchy within a broader European context, touching on sovereignty, taxation, and early parlements in medieval polities.
