small 8vo. pp. [2]ads, 1 p.l., [v]-xxxii, [blank leaf], 468. lacking half-title. large folding partly coloured engraved map (frontis.). ads on endleaves. original blind-stamped cloth, rebacked (front flyleaf replaced, paper lightly embrowned, some discolouration to upper front cover). Second and Best Edition, almost entirely rewritten and greatly expanded to include experiences and observations gained from four years residence in Lower Canada. The statistics for this edition are mainly from 1848-51. Brown provides general remarks regarding geography, climate, population, agriculture, municipal government and the administration of justice, education, religion, trade and resources, wages, rents and cost of living, choosing and acquiring lands, and transportation, as well as a detailed description and assessment of the individual districts of Upper and Lower Canada, including Montreal, Kingston, Midland, Newcastle, Home, Gore, Talbot, London, Huron, and Western districts.
