Views in North Wales, from Drawings by T.L. Rowbotham, With Notes by W.J. Loftie

Views In North Wales, From Drawings By T.L. Rowbotham, With Notes By W.J. Loftie by William John Loftie. This volume presents a program of North Welsh scenery through drawings by T. L. Rowbotham, accompanied by archaeological, historical, and descriptive notes by the Rev. W. J. Loftie. Originally published in 1875, the work blends geological and topographical exposition with picturesque travel writing. It surveys Snowdon and the Snowdonian region, discussing Lower Silurian rocks, glacial theory, and the surrounding geology, and then surveys ascent routes, valleys, and notable sites. The guide-like text extends to major landmarks such as Cader Idris, Conway Castle, Caernarvon Castle, and Beddgelert, interweaving historical narratives—e.g., Edward I’s Welsh castles, the fate of Llewelyn, and medieval fortifications—with vivid landscape descriptions and quotations from earlier observers. The book thus functions as both a geological survey and a tour-guide to the landscapes, antiquities, and lore of North Wales in the 19th century.
