Some illustrations. Vilcabamba is a small town located in the Loja Province of southern Ecuador. Nestled in a picturesque valley, Vilcabamba is often referred to as the "Valley of Longevity" due to the widespread belief that its residents live significantly longer than average. The legend of Vilcabamba's extraordinary longevity dates back to the 1950s and 1960s when reports began to circulate that many of the town's inhabitants were living well into their 100s. These reports attracted the attention of scientists, journalists, and tourists from around the world. Dr. Miguel Salvador, a physician and researcher, was the first researcher to conduct extensive fieldwork in Vilcabamba. His research involved a combination of medical examinations, interviews, and demographic studies. He sought to identify commonalities among the elderly population that might explain their extended lifespans. This book summarizes his findings. Despite the initial excitement, subsequent scientific investigations determined that the ages of many individuals were exaggerated due to inaccurate birth records or cultural practices.
