A Village Commune (Classic Reprint)

A vivid portrait of a rural Italian town forced to confront the costs of progress and power.

Ouida’s narrative paints a country life that rests on air, fields, and family labor, then exposes how machines, taxes, and corrupted authority threaten it. The book blends intimate village scenes with larger social critique, inviting readers to weigh freedom, justice, and community against upheaval and exploitation.

Centered on the struggles of ordinary people, it moves from the open hills to crowded institutions, showing how a simple, healthy life can be damaged—and sometimes redeemed—by modern power and law.

• Rural life described as healthy, communal, and deeply human, set against the push of industrial modernity.

• Characters confront injustice, prison, and the pain of losing land, livelihood, and loved ones.

• Sharp reflections on governance, law, and what constitutes true progress for a nation.

• Vivid imagery of landscapes, music, and daily life that anchors the social critique in concrete detail.

Ideal for readers who enjoy historical fiction with a strong social conscience and lush, sensory depictions of Italian country life.

Ouida (1839 - 1908) was the pseudonym of the English novelist Maria Louise Ramé (although she preferred to be known as Marie Louise de la Ramée). During her career, Ouida wrote more than 40 novels, children's books and collections of short stories and essays. Her work had several phases. In 1863, when she was 24, she published her first novel, Held in Bondage. (She later claimed to have written her well-received novel Idalia (1867) at the age of 16. It featured a rebellious ingenue heroine who was sympathetic to Italian independence.) In her early period, her novels were considered "racy" and "swashbuckling", a contrast to "the moralistic prose of early Victorian literature" and a hybrid of the sensationalism of the 1860s and the proto-adventure novels being published as part of the romanticisation of imperial expansion. Later her work was more typical of historical romance, though she never stopped comment on contemporary society. She also wrote several stories for children.
