Vincenzo: Or, Sunken Rocks

Vincenzo: Or, Sunken Rocks by Giovanni Ruffini. The novel traces the life of Vincenzo Candia, a brilliant young Piedmontese lawyer whose talents are harnessed by the Savoy government during the early days of Italian unification. His marriage to Rose Candia anchors him in a world of palace life, parsonages, and Savoyard politics, while Don Pio and ultramontane clergy symbolize the Church’s resistance to state interference. The narrative follows their journey from Florence to Chambery and Rumelli, as Vincenzo strives to serve his country without sacrificing personal integrity, while Rose’s devotion and social influence complicate political loyalties. Crises—ranging from convent suppression to the Papal–Savoyard collision over Rome—drive the couple toward separation, exile, and renewed attachment. The book culminates in Vincenzo’s precarious decisions, the deaths and consolations within the family, and a bittersweet outlook on a nation moving toward unity. An intricate blend of historical fiction, political debate, and intimate drama.
