A Vindication Of The Doctrine Of The Holy And Ever Blessed Trinity, And The Incarnation Of The Son Of God: Occasioned By The Brief Notes On The Creed Of St. Athanasius, And The Brief History Of The Unitarians, Or Socinians, And Containing An Answer To Both by William Sherlock. This polemical religious treatise argues for the orthodox Christian doctrines of the Trinity in unity and the true Incarnation of Christ, in opposition to Socinian critiques. Sherlock clarifies what constitutes a contradiction and defends the view that the Trinity comprises three distinct persons sharing one divine essence, while maintaining the unity of the Godhead. He defends Athanasius’s Creed, discusses differences between the Greek and Latin churches (notably the Filioque), and articulates the relations within the Godhead—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—begotten, proceeding, and coequal. The work counters Socinian/Unitarian positions, asserts the necessity of Catholic faith for salvation, and addresses baptism, the Spirit, and Christ’s mediatorial kingdom. It surveys Scripture, patristic authorities, and church practice to uphold orthodox doctrine and refute alleged absurdities and contradictions.
