Original silver gelatin. Uncertain date but more than likely 1928. On the recto we read below the image (matted out) - " ?874? in black sharpie lower right below photo image, as well as ?Proof only, Not for sale or display." And on the verso - "Proof only. Not for display.? Also verso in pencil, ?874. 4, 9 3/4/11? Image is 10 x 6 inches. Mated, framed and glazed. Very good tonalityEugene Buechel was a priest and photographer at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. It is from his notes that we derive the title. Buechel Very little is known of the two women shown but it is quite a stark image. Eugene Bechtel Spent over 40 years (from 1902 until his death in 1954) working on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Reservations in South Dakota. A very sympathetic priest he actually stove mightily to understand all aspects of Lakota life, including their language. In the early 20th century he took thousands of photographs of all aspects of life on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations of South Dakota.
