About this Item
Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: Mikhail Sholokhov is rightly considered both in his own country and abroad the foremost Soviet novelist of his generation. Born in 1905, in a working Cossack family, Sholokhov s most impressionable years were those of the Russian Revolution and Civil War which has described with penetrating insight in his famous novel And Quiet Flows the Don. In his second major work, Virgin Soil Upturned- Book One (being listed here), Sholokhov turns to the great remoulding of Russian life that followed the Revolution the collectivization of agriculture…Though the scene is set in a small Cossack village, Sholokhov s scope is no less great than in his other work for the fate of his characters is rhe fate of a whole nation undergoing the greatest social revolution in its history. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 8 inches, 422 pages plus the colophon in Russian) was published by the Progress Press of Moscow. The book is undated but a note on the back flap of the dust jacket says it was first published in 1932 and that the author published Book Two in 1959, suggests that this volume is dated about then. This book is bound in brown cloth boards with decorations and titles on cover and spine; it is protected by a pictorial dust jacket. It was translated from the original Russian by R. Daglish. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket has small tears on the top & bottom of the front cover and some bumping to the corners. The hard covers are bright and handsome with some minor bumping as well. Inside a former owner left her inked name on the front endpaper but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages are clean and bright throughout without toning or foxing. Seller Inventory # 56
