Gr. 4-7. In this volume on Virginia, part of the Life in the Thirteen Colonies series, Pobst traces social and political changes and events during the colonial period. She presents the ways of life of both the Powhatan Indians and the English colonists, and she does not overlook the violent aspects of the history: cannibalism at Jamestown; warfare between settlers and Indians; brutality toward slaves. The text mostly offers a reasoned, balanced view, though it makes the generalization that "children who grew up in a manor house were quite spoiled." Illustrated with color reproductions of paintings, prints, and maps, the book concludes with a recipe, a craft activity, a time line, a glossary, and a brief list of recommended readings; no source notes are provided.
