Adeline Virginia Stephen est n�e le 25 janvier 1882 � Londres. Adolescente fragile, elle commence la r�daction d'un journal � quinze ans et suit notamment, en parall�le de nombreuses lectures, des cours d'histoire et de grec au King's College. D�s 1904, elle �crit ses premiers articles et comptes rendus pour The Guardian. Durant cette p�riode, des amis de son fr�re a�n�, romanciers, essayistes et artistes, se r�unissent dans la maison familiale : ces r�unions, o� elle rencontre Leonard Woolf, qu'elle �pousera en 1912 et avec lequel elle cr�era la prestigieuse maison d'�dition The Hogarth Press cinq ans plus tard, constituent les d�buts du groupe de Bloomsbury. En 1907, apr�s divers voyages (au Portugal, en Espagne, en Gr�ce, en Turquie...), elle esquisse un premier roman qui deviendra Travers�es (1915). En 1918, elle compose Nuit et jour, qui para�t l'ann�e suivante, bient�t suivi de La Chambre de Jacob (1922), de Mrs Dalloway (1925), de Vers le Phare (1927) et d'Orlando (1928). R�unissant deux conf�rences donn�es � Cambridge, elle publie en 1929 l'essai f�ministe Une chambre � soi. La d�cennie 1930 voit encore la parution de trois romans phares : Les Vagues (1931), Flush (1933) et Les Ann�es (1937). Le 28 mars 1941, alors qu'elle vient de faire parvenir un dernier manuscrit � son �diteur - Entre les actes -, Virginia Woolf, dont la vie fut travers�e par de graves troubles d�pressifs, met fin � ses jours ; elle s'enfonce dans l'Ouse, rivi�re du Sussex, les poches emplies de pierres.
