Die Schriftstellerin Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) fand im s�denglischen Sussex die Ruhe, die sie zum Schreiben brauchte. 1919 ersteigerte sie mit ihrem Mann Leonard Woolf Monk’s House, ein am Ortsende des kleinen D�rfchens Rodmell gelegenes Cottage. Das wird, so Virginia, f�r immer und ewig unsere Adresse sein; ich habe sogar schon unsere Gr�ber auf dem Friedhof markiert, der an unsere Wiese grenzt. Nur eine Zugstunde von London entfernt, war es ein idealer R�ckzugsort. Im Herbst 1940 zogen die Woolfs schlie�lich ganz nach Rodmell. Monk’s House hatte f�r Virginia etwas in der Art einer Promenadenmischung, die sich einem ins Herz schleicht. Hier entstanden die Romane Jakobs Zimmer, Mrs Dalloway, Die Fahrt zum Leuchtturm und Die Wellen. Nicht zu vergessen die von ihrer Schriftstellerkollegin Vita Sackville-West inspirierte Roman-Biographie Orlando.
