At the age of six or seven, Vishnu was abandoned on the streets of Patna, alone, hungry, and with no understanding of why the people he loved had disappeared from his life.
His father, once a loving and devoted man, was unable to cope with an unexpected downturn in his life. He turned to alcohol and gambling, eventually walking away from his wife and young son.
Vishnu’s mother, who had dreamed of giving her son an education and a better future, became a victim of a brutal assault. After becoming pregnant as a result of the rape, she left Vishnu in the care of a street vendor for what was supposed to be a single day. She never returned.
The street vendor himself soon became a victim of violence. Attacked and severely beaten by local hooligans, he abandoned his stall and disappeared. Once again, Vishnu was left completely alone.
For two days, the little boy survived on the streets.
Then, by chance—or perhaps by fate—a household servant discovered him. Vishnu was filthy, starving, frightened, and crying. Taking pity on the child, the servant brought him to a wealthy woman in the neighborhood known for her compassion and her dedication to educating poor and disadvantaged children.
The woman welcomed Vishnu into her home.
For the first time in a long while, Vishnu had food, shelter, clothing, and the opportunity to learn. She treated him with affection and gave him something he had almost forgotten existed: hope.
But even in a home filled with kindness, Vishnu could not escape the cruelty of others.
Some of the household servants resented the attention and affection he received from the woman and her family. They saw him as an outsider—a poor street child who had somehow been given privileges they believed he did not deserve. As Vishnu grew older, their resentment intensified.
When he became a teenager, they insisted that he stop spending his time reading and studying and instead work alongside them in the household. When he resisted, their jealousy turned into accusations. Vishnu was falsely accused of stealing.
Humiliated and frightened, Vishnu decided to leave and travelled to a neighboring town and found work as a servant.
And so began another chapter in the extraordinary saga of his life.
Vishnu’s childhood and youth became a succession of triumphs and setbacks, kindness and cruelty, opportunity and deprivation. Yet through every hardship, one quality remained constant: his determination to build a better life.
He worked. He learned. He educated himself whenever and however he could. Along the way, Vishnu encountered individuals who recognized something in him—his intelligence, sincerity, honesty, and extraordinary capacity for hard work. People offered friendship, guidance, education, or simply a helping hand when he needed it most.
Slowly, almost imperceptibly, Vishnu began to rise. The boy who had once been abandoned on the streets of Patna began to build a life of his own.
But just as he was preparing to marry and believed that he finally understood who he was and where he had come from, an astonishing secret emerged. He discovered his family history—and a pedigree—far beyond anything he could have imagined during the years when he had been struggling simply to survive. He learned about his parents and grandparents.
Vishnu’s story is ultimately a story about more than poverty and success. It is a story about love and abandonment, compassion and cruelty, dignity and humiliation, poverty and privilege, caste and class, abuse and forgiveness, and the extraordinary power of determination.
Above all, it is the story of one young man who refused to surrender to the circumstances into which he had been thrown.
