More than 500 of the 2000 dressmaking procedures regularly used in Vogue and Butterick patterns are demonstrated in this visual encyclopedia of sewing. The table of contents contains 47 broad sewing areas, including instruction for applique, bindings, buttonholes, collars, facings, linings, pleats, pockets, shoulderpads, and zippers. Each of these areas is subdivided, i.e., under the "pocket" can be found details on creating mock flaps, mock welts, patch pockets, side seam pockets, side slant pockets, and welt pockets. The editors' goal was to illustrate these techniques so clearly that professional results could be achieved by all home sewers. Since the step-by-step illustrations focus on technique and not on today's fashion, this title has an enduring quality. The sole concern is dressmaking, however, so patrons will have to go elsewhere for instructions on creating home decorating items such as curtains, slipcovers, etc. This bible of dressmaking techniques will appeal to both the novice and experienced home seamstress and belongs in all public libraries.
