Frontispiece: black and white plate of Ben Jonson. 'The Play; At the end of the text of Volpone in the Workes of 1616, we are informed that the play was first acted in 1605. It is perhaps as well that this explicitness forbids conjecture, for though the English allusions support a date towards the end of that year, the Italian ones, admittedly vague and veiled, would make the year of Jonson's birth a not-impossible date, or even, in the case of "Cardinall Bembo's - Cooke", about half a century earlier. No foxing, no previous names.
