Add to basketNew York: Literary Guild, 1935. Richard Loederer (1894-1981) was born in Austria. A popular illustrator, he also worked for the WPA. Some people find this travel book charming, with spectacular woodcuts by the author; however, negative comments run the gamut from "sensationalistic" to "lurid" to "racist." This is a Near Fine copy of the Book Club Edition, which is often misidentified because it has a stated "First Edition." The books are identical in text and binding, but the true First will have "Doubleday Doran" as the publisher on the Title Page . Also, the design of the dustjacket is different [both are striking]. Orange cloth binding, blindstamped, with a floral design featuring a a sailing ship. Titling on the spine in black and gilt. Mildly bumped. Clean text; 274 pages, very bright. Illustrated endpapers. Frontis illustration and twenty others within by the author. Translation by Desmond Ivo Vesey. The dustjacket is Very Good (Plus): complete and very bright, with a chip to the front cover. In an archival plastic protector. Book Club Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Illus. by Richard Loederer. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
