The largest instrument ever built inside an American asylum was not a cage. It was a pipe organ.
In 1926, Dr. Arthur Harrington raised thirteen hundred gilded pipes above the dining hall of Rhode Island's State Hospital for the Insane and sat a thousand patients beneath them.
Vox Humana is the story of his experiment and everything it couldn't stop: a superintendent murdered through his own window by an escaped patient the papers called the Mad Houdini, a cell of stone and iron built for a single prisoner, and a poem Harrington wrote to be sung. He died at his piano in 1939 with the music unwritten. Only the words survive.
The organ is gone. The dining hall lies under the asphalt. This book is what remains.
