8vo. Pp. 300. Simulated vellum binding with the original clear protective cover. Facsimile of the exceedingly rare first edition, London 1707. Funnell was Dampier's mate. The effort of their voyage was to harass the Spaniards. According to the Hill Collection citation, Funnell's "narrative contained much that was disapproved by Captain Dampier, who immediately after published a "Vindication of His Voyage." " That, in turn, prompted John Welbe, midshipman, to publish a tract exposing Dampier's cruel treatment of his crew. This is the publisher's Bibliotheca Australiana # 57. See Hill I, p. 117.
