Paris; Garnier Frères, 1850. 4:o. 27,5x19,5 cm. Engraved title, viii, 418, (2) pp. + 53 full-page wood engravings. Publisher's green cloth with blindstamped and gilt designs on spine and boards, gilt edges. Bookplate of Fredrik and Elisabeth Frölich. The spine is slightly worn and has a few small holes in the cloth along the joints. Corners are a little bumped and worn. Contents are clean and bright, save for a few insignificant specks. A fine copy. Zig-zag travels was the designation given to wanderings undertaken by pupils at boarding schools in southern France and Switzerland. As they often lived to far from home to go there on vacations, they roamed the countryside and visited the most famous sites nearby. Töpffer (1799-1846), Swiss teacher, author and cartoonist, mainly known for his illustrated books with comic episodes. He is widely regarded as the father or an early precursor to modern comics. "Voyages en zigzag" was originally published in 1844, and is an account of six holiday travels undertaken the years 1837-1842. The plates, and the hundreds of illustrations in the text, are engraved by Karl Girardet, Sigismond Himely and others, from original drawings mainly by Töpffer and Alexandre Calame.
