En 1758 lorsque Voltaire, âgé de 65 ans, acquit la seigneurie de Ferney, il déclara avoir trouvé un "hameau misérable" où il fit construire, suivant de près le chantier, la demeure de ses dernières années. Pendant près de vingt ans, Voltaire y reçut de nombreuses personnalités. Alors qu'il se déclarait "aubergiste de l'Europe", Ferney devenait le passage obligé d'une élite qui affluait de l'Europe entière.
