WAKE IN FRIGHT

Vintage Penguin First Edition. #2405. Cook’s novel follows John Grant, a young schoolteacher whose brief stopover in the outback town of Bundanyabba unravels into a brutal descent fuelled by heat, alcohol and peer pressure. As Grant is drawn into the town’s rough camaraderie, his judgement erodes and he becomes trapped in a cycle of humiliation, violence and self-loathing. The story’s stark, economical prose intensifies its claustrophobic atmosphere, exposing the darker side of isolation and outback masculinity. A powerful and unsettling modern classic, long recognised as one of Australia’s most disturbing works of fiction.
