WALKS IN ROME BY AUGUSTUS J.C. HARE 2 VOLUMES 1893 VELLUM BOARDS ILLUSTRATED. Staying with travel guides to Italy I am pleased to offer a vintage set of two volumes titled: Walks in Rome, by Augustus J.C. Hare. This set of small hard cover books (4 ¾ x 6 ½ inches, 310 & 316 pages) was published by George Allen of London and Orpington dated 1893 and the Thirteenth Edition (Revised). Despite the number of editions this set is not very common in the book trade; no similar copies (vellum) were seen online. The books are bound in vellum or what appears to be vellum and have elaborate gilt decorations and titles on covers and spines. The books are both well illustrated with sepia toned full-page postcard-like photos on heavy card stock, some blank on the reverse and others with images on both sides. The books open with a two-page map of the City showing the more important streets and buildings. The page edges are tinted red all-round. Condition: These vintage books are in very good condition. The vellum boards are rubbed on the edges and slightly darkened from handling. Volume I has a small patch where the gilt has been rubbed off the spine just above the title panel. There has been some faint bumping to the corners and spine tips. Inside a former owner has left his neat bookplate and his inked name in both volumes. Otherwise, they are unmarked and without toning or foxing. The heavier card stock of the plates seems to have wrinkled along the top page edges, nothing particularly severe. All the hinges are intact, and the bindings are tight, sound and square. These books are not ex-library or remainders.
