[8] pages, numbered 81 through 88. The edges of the pages are very slightly darkened. Very good. RARE. "Walt Whitman Fellowship Papers: 14. Philadelphia, April, 1895". Charles Roe was born in 1829 in Little Bay Side in the town of Flushing, Long Island. As a child, in the late 1830's, he attended the classes with Walt Whitman in the Little Bay Side School. In 1894, Horace Traubel interviewed Roe about his impressions of Whitman as a teacher. According to Traubel, Roe describes him as a man who "strangely attracted our respect and affection". Rather than referring to books, Whitman taught his classes orally, interspersing his lessons in grammar, reading, writing and arithmetic with stories & tales. Although he never used corporal punishment, Whitman kept his classes well-disciplined and was well-liked by the parents and community despite his atheism.
