About this Item
Today we are sadly seeing history repeat itself in the cities of Ukraine. This publication shows that 78 years ago a country on the border of Ukraine was under the same kind of brutal assault as is being launched by Putin's soldiers. Fifty photographs of Warsaw, Poland taken after the destruction by the Nazis during World War II. Photos Included: StJohns Cathedral destroted 1944 Gothic interior of restored St. John's 1953 Last residents driven out by NAZIS 1944 Ruins of Old City Warsaw 1944 Old City restored 1953 Prudential building in flames 1944 Prudential building restored 1958 Warsaw was so totally destroyed that there was talk of simply abandoning the ruined city or maintaining a section of it as a memorial to the war dead. Remarkably, the city was restored using photographic images from before the war. In some cases the restorers resorted to etchings of Warsaw created by the Italian artist, Canaletto. All the photographs are in fine shape, loosely attached in mats and could easily removed and framed. The photos are accompanied by a introduction by Polish poet, STANISLAW RYSZARD DOBROWOLSKI. This project was presented in an overlapping cloth enclosure which is in poor condition. This is a remarkable piece of our sad history. Seller Inventory # SP845
