One photograph, measuring about 9.5" x 7", tipped onto a mount with a 2-inch border, and housed in a contemporary white enamel frame. The photograph is evenly faded, though the image and inset captions entirely clear. The mound shows water damage around the entire border, not approaching the image. The frame shows mild general edge wear commensurate with age, though remains sound. The photograph has not been examined out of frame, nor are we inclined to remove the two dozen nails and wooden backing board and disturb the integrity of the presentation. A fantastic and informative visual record of the laying of the foundation of this historic building; a very large purpose-built Post Office commissioned by the United States Congress. The image is titled "City Post Office Washington, DC. Group Made on the First Stones That Were Layed in Foundation at N. W. Corner on December 2nd, 1892." Six individuals "for the government" are identified, along with their titles, as are another six "for the contractor." Among the government officials pictured are Thos. C. Steward, Supt. of Construction; John Q. Bright, General Foreman; and Ernest C. Steward, Inspector (among others). The photograph is an excellent piece of architectural history, recording the foundation of this historic building, which has seen several different uses. After a half century of deterioration, the building was slated for demolition, until several parties intervened and renovated the building, incorporating a large multi-use commercial space. By the early 2000s, it had become a hotel, and is currently, as of this writing, owned by the Trump Organization (whether that distinction will endure after the outgoing president's debts are called in is yet to be determined).
