Wendover Stories illuminates the lives of my family, friends and the many people I encountered while growing up in Uphams Corner, my old neighborhood in Boston. The book gives the reader a genuine street-level perspective of the sometimes chaotic and other times inspiring events that shaped our lives. My experience could not help but be entwined with my mother’s immigration story: the culture shock of emigrating from her arduous existence on a small, isolated island off the west coast of Ireland to an urban Boston neighborhood that came with its own set of nearly insurmountable challenges. Her young family certainly hit some bumps in the road on its way to the American Dream . In the pop-culture imagination, Boston of the 1960s and 1970s was a city riven by racial intolerance. While there may have been a lot of truth to that depiction, life often defies simplistic narratives. My experience tells that different story. When my mother passed away a few years ago, I wanted to ensure that her true essence would always be remembered. In telling my Wendover Stories, I also tell hers.
