Reprint. xxx, [2], 542 pages. Hardcover: H 22cm x L 14.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black cloth rubbed, usual dulling to gilt spine lettering, spine ends bumped and nicked with short tears at head, abrasion at board corners, small patch of dj paper still adhered at front board's center bottom edge. Maroon top edge with light stains; toning and foxing to fore-edge and bottom edge; foxing and soiling to endpapers; a few scattered spots to interior pages which, overall, remain quite clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy. This uncommon 1953 reprint of the scarce 1881 novel by Colonel William Clark Falkner (1825-1889), grandfather of Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner (1897-1962), features a marvelous Introduction by Newsweek magazine literary editor Robert Cantwell in which he reviews the life of Colonel Falkner and the literary and historical background of THE WHITE ROSE OF MEMPHIS as well as the novel's intriguing autobiographical parallels. Colonel Falkner appears as Colonel Sartoris in various novels and short stories by William Faulkner including SARTORIS, THE UNVANQUISHED, THE HAMLET, and ABSALOM! ABSALOM! {Lit Shelf #5} Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.…
