Who Do You See? The Struggles of an African American Teenage Boy
African American teenage boys face stereotypes and misconceptions on a daily basis. These false perceptions can affect how others see them—and how they see themselves—sometimes contributing to low self-esteem, diminished self-worth, and a lack of self-confidence.
To help challenge these stereotypes and change perceptions, we must first acknowledge that they exist, encourage healthy dialogue, and work together to change mindsets.
Who Do You See? The Struggles of an African American Teenage Boy was written primarily for boys ages 9–12, with the purpose of helping young readers recognize harmful stereotypes, develop confidence in who they are, and engage in meaningful discussions about identity, self-worth, and the challenges African American boys may face.
Although written at a reading level intended for younger readers, the book is also designed to encourage thoughtful conversations among young people ages 13–16, as well as parents, educators, mentors, and community leaders.
Whether read at home, in the classroom, or used during youth seminars, workshops, and mentoring programs, this book can serve as a starting point for important conversations that help build understanding, strengthen self-confidence, and challenge misconceptions.
