One of the last blocks of unprotected wild country left in the Lower 48, the Clearwater Country in north-central Idaho “is a small place, not a large place to save,” writes Charles Pezeshki. Serving as advocate as he chronicles this land and the people involved in efforts to preserve it, Pezeshki introduces us not only to a spectacular country, but also to the ordinary folks--a timber cruiser, a construction worker, an insurance salesman, a piano teacher--who labor against enormous odds to save it from the chain saw.

Wild to the Last is a journey, both sublime and horrific, through a magnificent natural land, complete with wild, roaring rivers, old-growth forest, and snowy peaks. It is also a desperate call for help as one of the last wild places in America is clearcut--while the public remains largely unaware and apathetic.

Charles Pezeshki is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Washington State University. An avid backpacker, whitewater kayaker, and environmental activist, he directs the Clearwater Biodiversity Project with his wife Kelley from their home in Troy, Idaho.
