Item description from seller

Full title - THE WORKS OF THOMAS DICK, LL.D. FOUR VOLUMES IN ONE. VIZ. AS ESSAY ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF SOCIETY: THE PHILOSOPHY OF A FUTURE STATE: THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION: THE CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHER: OR, THE CONNEXION OF SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY WITH RELIGION. Paged as [2], i-x, 11-191, [1], i-x, 11-127, [1], i-x, 11-186, i-x, 9-162. Hardcover; H 21.75cm x L 13.5cm. Original full leather binding; boards rubbed with some scuffing along edges; some wear to corners with top corners bumped; light bowing to front board; shallow surface chipping to spine ends with cosmetic surface creases lengthwise; spine's gilt stamping and title lettering of "DICK'S WORKS" are easily legible but are no longer vibrant. All edges marbled albeit now rather muted. Strong toning at edges of initial and terminal leaves; top corner of front free endpaper clipped out; several page corners creased with a few leaves creased as well; apparently missing a rear flyleaf and rear free endpaper. Mostly light to occasionally mild foxing to interior leaves. Double column text throughout with a general title leaf for the entire volume but with each of the four separately paginated books having a separate title page all sharing the same dual Hartford-New York 1838 imprint of H.F. Sumner-Robinson, Pratt & Co. Pages 17-22 of {Book 1} ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF SOCIETY BY THE DIFFUSION OF KNOWLEDGE: AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE ADVANTAGES WHICH WOULD RESULT FROM A MORE GENERAL DISSEMINATION OF RATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION AMONG ALL RANKS. ILLUSTRATED WITH ENGRAVINGS. have chipped and/or torn corners but without text loss. Book 2 titled as THE PHILOSOPHY OF A FUTURE STATE. Book 3 titled as THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION; OR, AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE MORAL LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE has only four leaves from title page to end of Contents but concludes with page x albeit not missing a leaf (evidently a printer's pagination error). Book 4 titled as THE CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHER, OR, THE CONNEXION OF SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY WITH RELIGION. Only a good+ copy per the aforementioned interior flaws but still a fairly handsome antiquarian book featuring the standard essays of Scottish minister and philosopher Thomas Dick (1774-1857). {Antiquarian-Shelf#1}.…
