“Whip” Heitman’s life looked like it was heading for disaster. After struggling with dyslexia, dropping out of high school, and a close call with the law, Whip found himself a member of the US Navy. But after being discharged, Whip discovered that employment did not come easily—his lack of education had caught up with him.
And so began Whip’s journey to educate himself. After attending college without a high school diploma, Whip soon fell in love with learning and felt compelled to share his passion with others—and in America’s last frontier of Alaska, no less. From an Eskimo village to an Athabascan Indian village and eventually to Fairbanks, Whip’s story is one of hair-raising adventure buoyed by good humor.
The perfect book for anyone who’s dealt with learning disabilities, Wow! That’s Cool, Whip! celebrates the power of education and a lifelong relationship with language and learning.
