A large open tear in the leather on the front board, and light to moderate bumping to corners, resulting in exposed boards. Front pastedown has pen marks, the remnants of a label, significant rubbing wear which is slightly exposing the interior front board, splitting along the front hinge, and residue of a page torn out before the title page. Contains the subscriber list and the individual separate title pages for Right of Man, Part 1st, Rights of Man, Part 2d., Common Sense, The Crisis, Public Good, and Letter Addressed to the Abbe Raynal. There is one title page for the final four texts, which also feature continuous pagination. Shelved in Room A. The present item appears to represent a previously unrecorded variant of Charles and George Webster's Writings of Thomas Paine, not listed in the ESTC or Evans. The title page states: "Containing, 1. Rights of Man, Part 1st 2. Rights of Man, Part 2d. 3. Letter to Mr. Dundas. 4. Letter to the Addressers. 5. Common Sense. 6. The Crisis. 7. Public Good. 8. Letter to Abbe Raynal. 9. Letter to the Earl of Shelborne. 10. Letter to Sir Guy Carlton. 11. Letter to the Authors of the Republican, a French Paper. 12. Letter to Abbe Syeyes." The order of the texts as they appear in the book comport with the order presented on the title page, and this does not correspond with any of the four variants identified by Evans (ESTC: W14462, W14463, W36949, W14020), nor with the other variant (likely printed in 1795) listed in the ESTC (W41520).
