About the book >.>.> WAGNER has in his Autobiography told us how, in the summer of 1845, when he had just completed the score of Tannh?user', he and his wife spent a holiday at Marienbad in Bohemia. His restless spirit would not, however, allow him to take his ease, and he began to plan two very different works, 'Lohengrin' and 'Die Meistersinger'. In Gervinus's History of German Literature he had come across references to the Nuremberg Master-singers, with Hans Sachs as the chief per-sonality, which attracted his lively interest. The title of the Marker', and his offices with the Guild, particularly delighted him, and, without any deeper knowledge of the subject, there came to him, on one of his country walks, the idea of a comedy scene, in which the cobbler, with his hammer on the last, should seek a revenge on the pedantic Marker by giving him a practical lesson in singing.
